The 6 R's

The 6 R’s

Basics of Zero-Waste

Let's get to basics! This journey can be daunting, but it's easy to keep it simple when we learn the 6 R's. (Didn't it used to be 3, you ask? Yep, the number has grown... with good reason!)

1. REFUSE - this is the easiest, most cost effective, and best for the planet. Simply don't buy things you don't need!

2. REDUCE - simplify your life and reduce not only what you bring into your house, but what you have already. Less stuff means less clutter, and less clutter means less to clean/care for, which frees up your mind and your time!

3. REPAIR & MEND - instead of throwing those jeans away, try stitching them up. Or check out some videos online on how to fix that dishwasher before bringing it to the dump. Making something new again feels amazing AND saves money. If it's beyond your capabilities, find an expert to help!

4. REUSE/REPURPOSE - there is always more life in items than you think. Get creative and find another use for it, or pass it on to someone else who will appreciate it, be it clothing, furniture, or kitchen items. Consignment stores are a great way to get some of your investment back, and thrift/free stores always appreciate more inventory in good condition.

5. ROT - so many of our methane emissions come from food waste thrown in the garbage. Meal planning can greatly reduce this, but for the waste you do have, composting is the way to go. Not only does it reduce what's in the landfill, it also creates beautiful soil!

6. RECYCLE - if you simply cannot do any of the above, recycling is the last resort. Make sure you place items in the proper locations. Before throwing it in the garbage, check your local recycling depot to see what other household items they take... it's might be more than you know!

This is something you can refer to often if you're just getting started, or - if you're already well on your way - it's a great way to keep you on track. Save it, forward to a friend, or even print it out and stick it on your fridge as a reminder!
