Earth-Friendly Gift Wrapping Ideas
Did you know that Canadians generate over 545,000 tonnes of waste, along with 6 million rolls of tape, from gift wrapping and shopping bags each year? That's about 78,000 elephants worth of waste added to our landfills. Yikes!
But there are alternatives! Hooray! Easy, beautiful, fun, and inexpensive ways to help keep trees alive and reduce our footprint on this stunning home of ours.
Here are just a few:
1. Household Papers - We have so many beautiful gift wraps in our homes already. Instead of buying new, wrap gifts up in newspaper, magazines, maps, word puzzles, or kids' drawings. Add some twine and foliage to spruce it up.
2. Jars - We love jars! They have a way of making everything look beautiful. And they're something we all usually have right in our cupboard! Fill them with all sorts of gifts. Cookies, pickles, teas, coffee, jams, bath salts, or even little notes about how great someone is!
3. Fabric Scraps - These - and even pre-loved clothing - make the perfect wraps for gifts. Or, if you're feeling extra creative, there are many fun online tutorials for making gift bags from fabric that can then be re-gifted year after year.
4. Packing Paper - Instead of throwing packing paper away, grab some stamps, crayons, or paints, and create your own one-of-a-kind wrapping paper. This is also super fun to do with the kids!
5. Furoshiki - The gift that keeps on giving! Reusable fabric gift wrap that's beautiful and can be used over and over, gifted and regifted. So good, it's been used in Japan since 710 BC! (We've got some beautiful prints in the store.)
So that's the short list. There are so many ways to get creative with your wrapping. Hope this has given you some ideas!
