5 Ways to Dispose of Pumpkins

5 Ways to Dispose of Pumpkins

And keep them out of the landfill!

How do you dispose of your pumpkins?

According to Stats Can, there are over 82,000 metric tonnes of pumpkins grown each year in Canada. If they end up in the landfill, these Halloween staples do nothing but emit methane gas. Now that IS scary!

But there are better options for our pumpkin pals! Here are a few:

Donate - local farmers and friends with chickens may love your unwanted pumpkins. Ask around! You may make a lot of animals happy.

Compost - remove any candles or wax, chop it up, and add to your compost. You can also use your municipal yard waste pickup or check to see if any community gardens might need them.

Bury - chop your pumpkin up into thumb-size pieces and bury in soil. They will decompose and add to the soil’s fertility, which will help plants and flowers grow in spring!

Eat - although most carving pumpkins are not quite as tasty as others, they are still edible and there are many recipes that are worth giving a try!

Pumkin Smash - perhaps the most satisfying for the kids! Pumpkins are dropped and explode on impact. Donations are raised for great causes and the smashed pumpkins are used for compost.

Hope that helps make keeping your pumpkins out of the landfill easier!
