Why Supporting Local Matters
When thinking about what support we could offer you this holiday season, the usual ideas popped up: zero waste x-mas decor, how to wrap gifts in a sustainable way, clutter-free gifts, the hierarchy of planet-friendly gift-giving... all of which we will probably touch on at some point, because they're all helpful!
But we recently saw a post from a fellow refillery who's struggling, and we've heard similar rumblings from other stores. Covid and inflation has really put the squeeze on a lot of small businesses. So, although we just passed "Small Business Saturday", we feel it's important to remember throughout the year, and especially throughout this season: where we spend our money matters.
Of course, it matters because of WHAT we're choosing to spend our money on. But it also matters because of WHO we're choosing to spend it on. This graphic contains all our vendors who live right here on Vancouver Island & on our beloved Gulf Islands. They're our friends & family, our neighbours, the people we pass on forest trails or our stunning beaches. These are the ones who are caring for our home by investing their time, energy, and brilliant ways of keeping this home beautiful straight into it. It's incredibly challenging owning a small business right now. For them, this is a true labour of love. A deep desire to preserve our stunning environment for future generations.
So, in order to support you during this season, we're highlighting how purchasing from small businesses and local vendors does just that. It puts the future of our community into the hands of the people who live and love in this amazing place.
Let's support our local businesses in the Comox Valley, and all the others close to home, wherever your home may be. Keeping our culture strongly rooted in community is the best way to survive trying times. And if you're looking for a free way to support these businesses, tell friends and family about them. Like, share, and/or comment on their social media content. Talk to people you meet about them. Share your appreciation for what they do. It may not seem like much, but all of these actions truly help!
