5 Reasons to Grow Your Own Food!

5 REASONS TO GROW YOUR OWN FOOD!

In addition to contributing to food security and reducing the pressure on farms to produce enough food for everyone, here are some great reasons!

1. It’s a good way to save money on food.... something we could all use right now! Although there’s a small investment with soil, seeds, containers, etc., a well-tended garden will make that money back easily. Each seed pack only costs a few dollars, but will produce several yummy plants! 🌱🌱🌱

2. It’s beneficial for the environment. Getting fresh food to your nearest store requires transportation and packaging. Growing your own food means your carbon footprint is reduced and packaging is eliminated! Think of all the delicious unpackaged tomatoes you could have, hanging from your own vine, ready to be plucked & enjoyed.... mmmm... 🍅

3. It gives you control over how your food is grown. Given that so much of our food nowadays has various pesticides/herbicides or other synthetic products used on it, and sometimes we just can’t afford to buy organic, this is a great way to manage what goes onto your food before it goes into your mouth. Plus, homegrown food just tastes that much better! 😋

4. It helps you stay active. Being in nature has numerous health benefits, like reducing stress, improving mental clarity, and boosting energy levels. Gardening is also a great form of exercise! All that bending, squatting, and lifting keeps you strong & agile. Plus, you get the glorious benefits of Vitamin D! 🌞💪

5. It’s a great learning opportunity! Most gardeners say they learn something (or many things) each year. It’s a wonderful way to practice being accepting of failures and celebrating wins - and learning from each! It’s also a fabulous way to teach kids about where food comes from & where it’s grown. Gardening can help kids learn about responsibility as they care for their plants, and it’s a great way for everyone to learn about different types of vegetables, how they grow, nutrition, and how to incorporate fresh produce into meals. 🥒🍓🥕🥬
