Candle Bloom... What is It?

A common question we get is about beeswax candle bloom… what it is, and if we should keep it or wipe it away… 🤔
“Bloom” – what is it?
Bloom refers to a white, cloudy, or crystalline film that develops on the surface of beeswax over time. This happens when the natural oils from the beeswax rise up to the surface and crystallize. Bloom can be opaque white or translucent and may vary depending on the color of the beeswax, humidity, temperature, even air pressure!
In some cases, fully developed bloom will sparkle beautifully in the light giving the appearance of crystals or snowflakes. ❄️
Seeing bloom on your beeswax candles is good news! It means your candles are 100% beeswax! If you never see bloom, it means your candles are likely blended with paraffin, palm, or soy wax.
So… what should we do with it?
The great news is that it’s up to you and the aesthetic you feel looks best! Many candle connoisseurs love the look of bloom as it gives an antiqued appearance, adding to the rustic charm of beeswax candles. You’re of course also welcome to remove the bloom if you prefer a shiny polished look to your candles. Coloured candles certainly look much brighter when polished.
If you would like to polish your candles, all you need is a soft cloth to rub the bloom away. We find nylon stockings work well for this. If you happen to have any candles with detail on the surface, another option for removing bloom is to use a blow dryer on a warm setting. And some people just set them in the sun for a bit, though we may need the temps to go up a wee bit before we try that!
