6 Tips for Food Storage

6 Tips for

Food Storage

Help your food last longer!

Food waste is a problem we all face, so we wanted to share these tips to keep your food longer!

1. Fresh Fruit: We're in the middle of fruit season! Such a delicious time, but sometimes we buy more than we can consume before it goes bad. If you notice your fruit is seeming a little sad, resist the urge to toss it out & toss it in the freezer instead! It's perfect for smoothies, jams, sauces, and baking.

2. Fresh Herbs: Keep these wonderful additions to every meal from drooping too soon by giving the stems a quick snip, plunking them in water, and placing them in your fridge. Another cool trick is to chop them up and place them in your ice cube tray. Then fill with oil & freeze. You'll have fresh herbs for all your cooking needs ready to go all year long!

3. Leafy greens: These are tricky creatures to keep around because they go limp so quickly. Try wrapping it in a damp towel before storing in the fridge and see how much longer it lasts. For items like kale, treating them like herbs works great too!

4. Nuts: Nuts and seeds can go rancid quicker when left at room temperature (especially in the summer heat). By storing them in an airtight container in your fridge/freezer, you can save yourself money... and tears, because let's face it, saying goodbye to bad almonds (or pecans... or walnuts... or cashews) is a very sad affair!

5. Half-cut veggies: So many halves lost in the abyss of the fridge, wrapped in any number of items that prevent us from remembering it's in there. Simple trick is to just store in on a plate upside down et voila! It's easy to see & well-kept until you're ready to use it.

6. Fresh Veggies: We're mainly talking about carrots and celery here. They lose their water, get all floppy, and not very appetizing (though still great for soups!). One way to keep them crisp & fresh longer is to store them in water in the fridge. You can even bring these back to life sometimes with this cool little bath if they're not too far gone. 😊
